Our work with small farmers first began in Beluran, Sabah in early 2012. We initially started with the support of 2 key partners- Johnson & Johnson and MPOB. The initial goal was to see if RSPO certification was at all feasible for independent small farmers. MPOB were already engaging with small farmers on the ground through its Smallholder Palm Oil Cluster (SPOC) program focusing on good agricultural practices. Wild Asia built on this and started to develop the Group Scheme model that would eventually enable small farmers to reach the requirements of international standards in sustainable oil palm production (RSPO). It was indeed a successful venture because in September 2013, the first pilot group of 42 small farmers from Toniting village was successfully RSPO-certified. A first in Malaysia!
Today, the project is supported by multiple partners to cover a significantly larger area and to provide a physical link from small producers to the global markets.
One such formal collaboration is “SPOTS” (“Sustainable Palm Oil and Traceability with Sabah Small Producers”), established in 2015. Initiated between partners Wilmar-Loreal-Global Amines-Clariant and Wild Asia-IDH, the aim is to support and certify small producers within Wilmar supply base in the Beluran area. This collaboration establishes a physical supply link for our farmers to the end buyers. As a result more farmers benefit and the group scheme continues to grow progressively from year to year.
